Contemporary electronic music expresses serious, or academic, music forms including electronic art music and experimental music. Many musical concepts that were once considered far-reaching, such as computer music, the use of environmental sounds, and electronic modification of acoustic sounds, have been integrated into other mainstream music styles. In today’s culture, the term “electronic music” serves to distinguish music that is specifically inspired by electronics and relies on extensive usage of electronics for production. Many other types of music incorporate electronic elements in the sound but doe not rely primarily upon them. Popular styles which have emerged from the genre are electronic dance music and techno, electro, industrial music, electronica and trip-hop.
