Chango Spasiuk is a passionate accordion player and composer, the music he plays is chamamé, a warm-hearted, accordion-based rhythm that taps into native Guarana Spanish, Brazilian, Criollo and European traditions. Its natural home is northwest Argentina. Chango Spasiuk transforms the chamamé which is a rural dance music, into a highly elaborate art form presented mainly in concert settings. His role can be compared to that of compatriot Astor Piazzolla, who added jazz elements and a classical note to the tango. His seventh album in a precociously engaged career helped him win the BBC Newcomer award 2005, somewhat of a misnomer. Spasiuk’s musical dexterity and electrifying live performances have helped win over critics and youth alike to a music that is complex, impenetrable and deeply rooted in the steamy red earth of the Argentine-Brazilian border.
